The History of Design: Symbolism in Global Jewelry

  • The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen 20 West 44th Street New York, NY, 10036 United States (map)

Symbolism has played an integral role in man's history, and this role has been prevalent in all art forms for thousands of years. For historians, jewelry as talisman and adornment is one of the earliest examples of symbolic thought.  The origins of symbols were probably combinations of nature, early ancient human encounters, and concerns about survival and progeny; their significance in societies worldwide should not be minimized.  A clear understanding of these basic symbols leads to a deeper comprehension of ancient, antique, vintage, tribal, ethnic, and contemporary jewelry designs that will be valuable for collectors, historians, and designers alike.  This lecture will draw from cultures and civilizations worldwide.  ASJH members are invited to join Sindi Schloss for a fascinating lecture on the history of these symbols and their use in jewelry.

In addition to the lecture, copies of Ms. Schloss's new book "Symbolism in Global Jewelry" will be available at a discounted price for ASJH members in good standing (please make sure your membership is current and active; contact our office to confirm. Email us at  info@jewelryhistorians.org or call us at 914-235-0983. The website is jewelryhistorians.org).  Books purchased at the event will be signed by the author. The ASJH member's price is $26.50.
