The American Society of Jewelry Historians was founded by Jean Appleton, creator of the Jewelry History Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Inspired by European jewelry groups she had encountered, her intent was to offer a shared experience of interest in jewelry history with everyone: young and old, newbie and experienced, rural and urban, simplistic or sophisticated. Our non-profit organization (501C3) seeks to educate members on all things jewelry related, running the gamut from precious stones and metals and how pieces are created all the way to famous jewelry designers, memorable collectors, jewelry salons, important jewels and the tales that accompany them. Our mission is to utilize the organization's decades of experience sharing jewelry history with new generations of jewelry lovers worldwide. Jewelry is part of the human experience, and we want to make the stories as accessible as possible to all interested.
